“If I weren’t doing this I would be an Indian and sit on a horse on the side of the highway and cry when people littered,” Reno Collier, a stand-up comedian whose performed on stages across the country with the likes of Larry the Cable Guy and Jeff Foxworthy, said.
Collier, who started his career as a Physical Education teacher in the Atlanta area, began his career at a comedy club tending bar. Working this job and having the luxury of watching the comedians and customers who attended shows allowed Collier to build his comedy routine. Now, the comic incorporates everybody he comes across, especially those close to him. “I come up with my material by watching people, mostly those in my family make mistakes,” Collier said. “Most of them are made by me, but anyone’s mistakes are funny. I also love to watch people lose it.”
Working the stage and meeting other comedians has gotten Collier stints at the 2000 HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado and the 2002 Montreal Comedy Festival. And even though he learned a lot from these experiences, Collier said his best lesson was given to him by another comic. “The best advice I ever got about stand-up was to become friends with the bartender the first night of the week,” Collier said.
The comedian was host of NBC’s “Great American Road Trip,” which premiered July 2009 and one of the stars of “Blue Collar Comedy: The Next Generation.” Collier has also been seen on NBC’s “Late Friday,” “Politically Incorrect,” “The Martin Short Show,” “Comedy Central’s Premium Blend,” and “The List on VH 1.”
