As a self proclaimed "Twilight" fan (aka Twi-hard) I made sure I tuned in to "Saturday Night Live" last weekend to see Jacob, er, Taylor Lautner fill hosting duties. With many hopes dancing in my head of NBC allowing a rain machine on set and a deficit in shirts in Taylor's size I was excited to see if the some-time werewolf could make me laugh. Turns out, he can. Unfortunately he was not wet and he was wearing a shirt. *Sigh* And even though I'm on Team Edward (I thought I should be honest with you about my position) I can totally appreciate the goodness of Team Jacob. And Taylor brought the funny, or I thought.
I often imagine that if you are lucky enough to be asked to host SNL the most nerve racking part has got to be the opening monologue. Unless you're a stand up comic I'd venture to guess standing on stage trying to be funny to millions of people you can't see has to be terrifying. I always expect the host or hostess to come out shaking with fear. Taylor seemed nervous but definitely had it in check. His monologue cracked me up big time. My sister actually snorted a few times. But she's on Team Jacob, and there for I think she enjoyed it even more than me.
Taylor used his stage time to point out something I don't think many people realized; he was on stage when Kanye stole Taylor Swift’s thunder at the VMA's! Taylor used video footage of the VMA's to show him standing on stage nearly oblivious to the hootenanny going on in front of him between Kanye and his rumored lady love. He poked fun at how funny this is and how he wished he could rewind time and do it over again. His display of how he would come to Taylor Swift’s aid was hysterical. The best part was the mannequins of Kanye and Swift. And eventually, and much deserved, Kanye got his head kicked off Kung Fu style by Taylor Lautner. And I thought that was a great monologue. Play to your strengths, ya know?
The rest of the show wasn't as funny as the opening bit. The football skit right after the monologue made me laugh (my sister laughed harder). I've always wondered about when sports shows film those little blips of the players. Anyway, it's always funny when people make faces. (And by always I mean as long as you're hot and have been busy rescuing girls from heartbreak and turning into a werewolf to keep her safe from vampires). But from that skit on things kind of fizzled for me.
The show choir skit was kind of amusing. Andy Samberg cracked me up with his heckling. Taylor was funny as 'Mikash" the foreign (and possibly gay) exchange student. The singing and dancing was funny but I really only gave it a chuckle. (My sister was still laughing out loud, or LOL for you hip kids out there). From that point on there's not much to mention. Taylor did the obvious with a skit poking fun at the “Twilight” phenomenon. We knew that was coming and I had hoped for more. Taylor was just some teen girl on Team Jacob and had to debate against his ex-bff on Team Edward. I think he had an open door to go a lot further than that.
Taylor Lautner did a good job hosting. I'd even give him a solid B+. He was willing to dress up like a girl. He danced around in a sparkly vest in a show choir and did a few other embarrassing bits. I think that's why I watch SNL a lot of the time, to see just how far someone is willing to go for a laugh. How much will you embarrass yourself to be funny? I'd say Taylor was brave. But he could have gone a little further. I hope he does get the chance to come back again someday. I'd tune in.
